Descendants of David BEHELLER

First Generation

1. David BEHELLER died about 1806 in Franklin Co., VA.

David Beheler appears on the tax lists for Henry County, VA in 1779, 1780 & 1782. 1778-80 Tax lists of Henry County, VA (Adams, 1973) Year 1779 p. 20 Beakler, David Tax for raising money for service of the United States, due 20 Feb. 1780.

From "Franklin County (VA) History", p.202 - "Samuel King was another early Franklin County schoolteacher. In 1790 he charged David Beheler 3 pounds for 'teaching 3 children 10 months each.' ...King was not paid and took Beheler to court. Apparently they quickly reached an agreement because the case was dismissed."

Franklin County Deeds (Beck 1978) Book 1 p. 107: 4 September 1786 "David Beckler of Franklin County conveys to Enoch Hodges, farmer, of same, for 100 pounds, 100 acres on the branches of Chestnut and Pigg River, bounded by Beckler's old line, William Thompson, the road, Beckler's old line". Elizabeth the wife relinquished her right of dower.

Recorded 2 October 1786. The same land transfer I found listed in Franklin County Court Order Book 1 (Wingfield) p. 58 dated 2 Oct. 1786: A deed, David Beheler to Enoch Hodges, acknowledged, and Eliza the wife being privily examined relinquished her right of dower, and ordered recorded.

David Beheler is in Franklin Co., VA Deed Book 2 page 441, 8 Oct 1792.

New Salem United Baptist Church was constituted on March 4, 1843. A group of ministers, at the request of the people of the community, met at the home of one Jacob Beheler for the purpose of organizing a church.

These ministers, W C Bransford, William Seamonds, Daniel Smith, William Spillman, S E Carpenter and Matthew Johnson, W C Behelers and J M Behelers heard the petitions of the people and after satisfying themselves as to their desires and worthiness, they constituted the crowd as a church of the Baptist faith with 45 members.

In April the church met at "Bethany Meeting House" on Long Creek and continued to meet there until 1850 when Edward Bradley deeded a parcel of land to the church. The plot was approximately 4 1/2 acres and lay along Long Creek and the ridge above it. Many years later members of the Law family arranged a barter of the lands, wherein a plot from their farm was exchanged for a plot of church property. The Law plot was to be used for a cemetery adjoining the church.

The earliest inscribed stone in the cemetery commemorate deaths which occurred in the early 1880's The grave of Edward Bradley, donor of the church site, is here. He died in the late years of the 19th century.

Rev. Christley Miller, one of Allen County's and southern Kentucky's outstanding pioneer preachers held meetings here. The minutes of services frequently mention him either as having held services there or with comments on the work he was doing with other congregations.

Rev. W L Bouie was pastor of the church for 24 years.

The church shown in this book is of hand-hewn logs and hand-sawed lumber and served the congregation until 1956 whe the present church was built.

According to "Franklin County (VA) History 1786 - 1986" by John S. and Emily J. Salmon 1993 p. 116: "Although many peddlers were from other states, some were from nearby counties. One was Jonathan Cundiff, of Bedford County, who lived near Staunton River. Cundiff was a gunsmith who farmed, kept bees, made flaxseed oil, owned property on Blackwater River in Franklin County that he leased to Isham Cundiff, and manufactured gunpowder in his powder mill. He not only made rifles and shotguns but repaired them and made parts that he sold to other gunsmiths. He also kept a diary between 1820 and 1824, in which he mentioned riding to the Franklin County courthouse on court days to sell gunpowder and trade with such local gunsmiths as John Beheler. When Cundiff traveled to and from the courthouse he stayed with several friends or business acquaintances, including William Smith, Peter Holland, John Meador Holland, Michael Johnson, Peter Booth, George Beheler, and Thomas Hill.

On page 123 - "John Beheler, a local gunsmith who was working in the county as early as 1820, was still active in 1850. Although he was not recorded as a gunsmith in 1860, Beheler no doubt kept working; when he died in 1881 he still owned a workbench and 'Riflings rods'." (The book shows a photograph of a rifle made by John Beheler ca. 1840, with bullet mold, powder horn, pouch, and worm. It is owned by Dr. J. Francis Amos of Rocky Mount, VA.)
